Seventeen women gather around the metaphorical fire of a lit theatrical stage to tell their stories, to dip their ladles into the bubbling stew-pot of humanity’s collective tales, some new, some old. They sing, they suffer, they laugh, they cry. Feisty, angry, whimsical and forgiving, they obey the ancient dramatic imperative to act out life’s most challenging obstacles, crises, revelations, and transformations, for their benefit and for ours. In the same way a painter moves towards the light, they stumble and grope and feel their way towards joy, taking us with them.
Carolyn Guillet is a writer, actor, director, producer and teacher who has devoted herself to the study and practice of theatre for over four decades. As a producer she ran the small interdisciplinary company Dramuse, specializing in hybrid performances of music, improvisation, poetry, storytelling and theatre. She spent seven years at Infinitheatre as its Co-Artistic Director alongside Guy Sprung. For a decade she taught students at Dawson College, where she specialized in improvisation, and directed many student productions including a gender-reversed version of “Taming Of The Shrew”, Jordan Tannahill’s “Concord Floral”, Ann Carson’s translation of Euripides’ “Elektra”, and Michel Tremblay’s “Les Belles Soeurs”. Notable acting roles include Queen Elizabeth in “Richard III” at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, playing opposite William Hurt, Deb in “Mom’s The Word” at the Centaur Theatre (Just For Laughs Festival), as well as roles in her own one-woman shows, “Plucked, Hammered and Strung” (Infinitheatre), and “The Beggar’s Ballet” (Montreal Fringe). Guillet’s work includes interdisciplinary performances and creations based on explorations of such non-theatre writers as Emily Carr (“No Boundaries”), Gwendolyn MacEwen (“Afterthoughts”), and Nancy Huston (“Limbes/Limbo”). Her life-long fascination with the actor’s creative process led to extensive study of the radical training techniques of Pol Pelletier, and clown work with John Turner. Guillet holds an MA in Drama from the University of Toronto, and an MFA in Performance from York University. She was born in Tennessee, was raised in Toronto, and has lived periodically in France. Although she currently resides in Montreal, where she very much enjoys the life of a flâneuse, she spends a lot of time in a cabin on an island in Ontario cottage country. She is currently writing a novel.
